Who Needs a Kindle?

Kindle, schmindle. And I don’t need no stinking iPhone apps. Okay, I don’t have an iPhone but that’s besides the point.

And Nook, who thought of that name for an ebook reader.

So who needs a Kindle? You don’t!

If you can open a pdf version of a book, like many publishers send out as review copies, then you have an ebook reader.

It’s called Adobe Acrobat.

A couple quick and dirty steps to Kindle freedom:

  1. Open the pdf in Acrobat
  2. Click View/Read Out Loud/Read to End of Document

If you’re like me (still stuck in Windows XP land) then you’ll hear Microsoft Sam’s digital voice.

Hey, for the price, I’ll listen to Sam all day long.

  1. LOL! I’m still in XP land, too. As far as the Kindle is concerned…I prefer hardcopies. I don’t care for the idea of reading a book from an electronic screen, computer or otherwise. You can’t use cute bookmarks with a Kindle, either. :)

I was skeptical at first. I love to read, and love traditional books, so I thought I would give it a try. The Kindle is fantastic! I have read several books on it so far – and I have only had it for about 3 weeks. It is so much more comfortable to hold and read that holding open a paperback or a heavy hard cover. I commute to work, and it always seemed that I did not have the book that I was in the mood to read. Now, I have all the books that I am reading with me at all times without having to carry several books that weigh my bag down.

I love the built in dictionary as well.

I do have to say I do not care for the magazine or newspaper feature. I rather read the paper for free online and see all the graphics.

The final bonus – I don’t need to get a bigger bookshelf to house books that I am only going to read once.
